Blood Pressure Monitoring and Alert System Using Wearable Technology
Hypertension, commonly referred to as the “silent killer,” remains a leading cause of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality due to its often-undetected progression. This study presents the design and implementation of a wearable blood pressure monitoring and alert system to enable real-time detection of abnormal readings. The prototype integrates a pulse sensor, NodeMCU ESP8266 microcontroller, and OLED display into a compact wearable device. Data are transmitted wirelessly to a mobile application developed in Android Studio using Kotlin, which visualizes readings and issues alerts for irregular blood pressure levels. The app was tested on a group of individuals of varying ages and genders and the results shows that the device could detect high or low blood pressure levels with a systolic variance within ±5mmHg of expected values. The device showed accuracy with an average systolic variance of ±3.2mmHg and an average diastolic variance of ±2.9mmHg which falls within the standard variance. The device also showed responsiveness, triggering alerts for systolic and diastolic pressures ≥140mmHg and 90mmHg respectively for all participants. Based on this study, our designed wearable device has shown some insightful results. Future work can be done in the area of the mobile and web application in connection with blood pressure monitoring and alert system using wearable technology.
